What is a phoneme?

What is a phoneme?

According to Google research, the definition of "phoneme" is: any of the perceptually distinct units of sound in a specified language that distinguish one word from another, for example p, b, d, and t in the English words pad, pat, bad, and bat.
In fact, a phoneme is not any of the perceptually distinct units of sound in a specified language that distinguish one word from another. We distinguish words by letters instead of phonemes. If that is the case, then we cannot explain why there are homonyms, for example, to, too, and two.
Phonemes are represented by International Phonetic Alphabets, rather than English letters.
